Maine Coon

Maine Coons are the gentle giants of the cat world. For being impressive in size these big cats are big lovers and crave attention from their owners and thoroughly enjoy the company of other animals. As you tell by the name these gentle giants are native to the United States and obviously from the name originated from Maine. Their silky, heavy water resistant fur protects the big cat from the outside elements, these cats would be good for outside cats but keep in mind that for the benefit of the cat it would be safer and more secure living indoors. Being indoors protects the cat from contracting any diseases and also protects it from being killed by motor vehicles. Another reason to keep the Maine Coon in doors is the cat isn’t very big on climbing so if the cat was being chased by a predator of some sort it would be difficult for the cat to escape. On a brighter note, this lovely cat is very easy going and good natured. If you’re looking for a cat who’s the life of the party and loves being active ALL the time this is the cat for you. The Maine Coon maintains kitten like energy throughout its life so be prepared to never be bored. Since this cat has a very high energy level it would be very good to keep the cat stimulated, they love chasing objects on the ground so any type of ball or fake toy mouse would do. Since the cats also like being outdoors, “if the cats not already outdoors”, owners can attach the cat to a leash or harness and walk it around like a dog. They do very well with the leash and harness if taught properly. Males of this breed can weigh up to 13 to 19 pounds and the females can weigh up to 9 to 12 pounds. Having a large amount of hair these cats definitely need to be groomed on a regular basis. Maine Coons also need to be monitored when eating because they may eat a little more than they should and develop weight problems. Other than the possible weight problem this cat would be a good addition in any home.
